Spring has sprung and your house needs some love! We’re busy, have jobs, kids, pets, stress, you name it, so the last thing you want is to have to deal with things failing! Staying up to date with home maintenance, although mundane, can expand the life of your home and appliances. Here’s an easy list to help you knock out your spring home maintenance duties.
San Diego Home Maintenance Checklist:
Vacuum Refrigerator Coils
The fridge can use up to 15 percent of your home’s total power, so you want it running as efficiently as possible.
Clean Range Hood Filters
Grease builds up in the filter as you cook and it’s important to clean or change them regularly to prevent a grease fire. You can soak them over-night in a water/ vinegar solution
Repair or Replace Damaged Window Screens
Prevent insect entry into your home by repairing or replacing any damaged window screens.
Clear Out Shrubbery/ Plants Encroaching on Home
Insects and rodents nest in dead leaves and wood chips. Clear all debris from around shrubs and plants. It’s a great idea to replace wood chips with pea gravel or decorative stone.
Power Wash
If you don’t own a power washer, you can purchase a good patio/concrete cleaner at your local home improvement store. Apply the cleaner per the instructions, let it sit, then scrub it with a stiff bristle broom or brush and rinse with the garden hose.
Clean Patio Furniture
Patio furniture can be cleaned with a power washer or simply soap and water. A Mr. Clean Magic Eraser works wonders on white plastic chairs and vinyl furniture.
Clean and/ or Repair Your Deck
A good washing is generally enough, but sometimes a deck may also need re-staining every couple of years. Repair any loose/rotted deck boards, posts or railings for safety.
Clean Out Dryer Vent Exhaust
While the dryer is running, check that the exhaust is coming out. If there isn’t much exhaust, check for blockages as well as you can. You may need a professional. Also vacuum the lint from the hose at the dryer and the exterior vent.
Clean Bathroom Exhaust Fans
Bathroom exhaust fans that are blocked with dust will not remove the moisture from the bathroom and can result in rusted light fixtures and mold issues.
Clear Your Roof and Gutters of Debris
Debris that sits on the roof can prematurely age and damage the roofing. Clear the roof gutters of debris and take a look at the angle of the gutters. Roof granules and dirt collect in the gutters and their weight can actually detach the gutter. Too commonly, you’ll find that a gutter is not pitched properly. It should be angled so that water runs towards the downspout end.
