Imagine Del Mar, But It’s 1909, and the Famous are Flocking to the Stratford Inn
Did you know? There is so much history behind this Del Mar resort hotel and the land upon which it sits. As I was running errands in Del Mar Village near L’Auberge Del Mar the other day, I thought about what life must have been like for those that stayed at the Stratford Inn, the stunning original resort built here in 1909. It was and still is the perfect destination, although these days, we don’t arrive via train depot.
If you’re wondering why Stratford Square (formerly Kockritz building) is seemingly a random English Tudor building, it’s because the original hotel, the Stratford Inn, was an English Tudor design by architect John. C. Austin. It was built about 10 or 20 years after the hotel to accommodate more visitors.
Yada yada yada, things were good, changes happened, the name changed, then demolished after it lost its appeal. After more than 20 years L’Auberge Del Mar opened its doors in 1989. Through multimillion dollar renovations, it still embodies the glamour of the original inn, complete with a replica of the Stratford Inn’s lobby fireplace.
If you haven’t been, book yourself a spa day and lunch, and enjoy the glamour of the past with the amenities and luxuries of Del Mar living, today.
