If you’re like most homeowners, hearing the term “DIY” sends a shiver down your spine. To be honest, some DIY projects are best left to the professionals. Here are some things to consider…
First, check your city rules to make sure you don’t need a permit for whatever work you’re doing. A quick call to the San Diego building department will get you started on the right foot. If you live in an HOA, be sure to check your CC&R’s too! You may need to submit an architectural request form.
Second, determine how much the project is going to cost to see if it fits in with your budget. I can’t even tell you how many clients I’ve seen start a DIY project only to find that it was a lot more expensive than they thought!
Third, determine the scope of work involved. Just because your favorite HGTV personalities make DIY projects look simple, it doesn’t mean they actually are. There are any number of things that can and do go wrong behind the scenes in any one of these hour-long segments. Working beyond your skill level can be both extremely dangerous and costly in San Diego.
Finally, here’s a list of projects to DIY (and outsource)…
3 DIY-Friendly Projects
- Painting
- Landscaping
- Hardware
3 Projects to Outsource
- Plumbing
- Electrical
- Roofing
Remember, tackling any major project or home renovation in San Diego without having the necessary permits, budget, or skill level can put you in danger, in debt, or with irreparable damage.
